Founded in 1946, South Melbourne Community Chest is a non-profit organisation that raises funds for distribution to local community groups.  We raise money from our opportunity shop, from financial donations, and from bequests.

Unlike most opportunity shops we are not part of a wider chain, we are embedded in the local community.  Our goods donations come from locals, our beneficiaries are local groups, our volunteers and staff are mostly local too.

The opportunity shop is run by a paid manager, a paid part-timer, and a great team of volunteers.  The Community Chest is overseen by a committee of management, also volunteers.

Our popular and long-time (20+ years) op shop manager is retiring at the end of this year.

The shop, well-known and well-loved in the South Melbourne community, specialises in quality second-hand and vintage clothing, together with a wide range of pre-loved goods and collectibles. The shop is open Monday-Saturday from 10.00am to 5.00pm.

Your role as op shop manager will be to continue this tradition, as well as enhancing our on-line presence and developing for future challenges.  You will be responsible for all day-to-day operations, ensuring high levels of customer service, community engagement, driving sales, and creating a welcoming environment for shoppers and a positive working environment for staff and volunteers.

  • Experience managing and coordinating volunteers
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and on-line merchandising
  • Computer skills, including word processing, data collection and entry
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and tasks

  • Motivate the team, recruit and train volunteers, organise rosters, ensure everyone is adequately supported, embed OHS in the culture.
  • Develop and implement on-line marketing strategies, build digital relationships with customers, update the shop’s presence on social media platforms.
  • Work with the management committee to set budgets and targets, develop and implement sales campaigns, monitor and report progress.
  • Promote community connections, know and acknowledge our donors, build relationships with our grant recipients.
